Treatment of Chronic Leg Ulcers

Treatment of chronic leg ulcers with the assistance of a portable pulsed magnetic therapy device was evaluated on 31 patients in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled parallel study (Stiller et al., 1992). The results were published in the British Journal of Dermatology.

Patients used the portable pulsed magnetic therapy device at home for 8 weeks, 3 hours a day.

The study compared extension of injuries, ulcer depth and also the level of pain before the therapy, after 4 weeks of therapy and finally after 8 weeks.

In the control group, there was no ulcer healed, and also in 54% of patients ulcers worsened.

On the other hand, in the group that applied pulsed magnetic therapy, 50% of patients experienced complete healing or significant improvement. None of the patients showed worsening condition. Moreover, there was significant pain relief reported and a great reduction in the depth of injuries.

The results of this study therefore demonstrated that low-frequency pulsed magnetic therapy considerably speeds up and improves healing of venous leg ulcers and also relieves associated pain.
