Pain Relief Using Different Doses of Pulsed Magnetic Therapy
Pain relief using different doses of pulsed magnetic therapy was tested in a clinical study with the assistance of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Pulsed magnetic fields of various intensities and frequencies of 1, 3, 5 and 9 Hz were used on 47 volunteers who experienced induced acute thermal pain.
Based on the results of previous studies, the brain was monitored for changes in hippocampus, ipsilateral insula and anterior cingulate cortex because the pain-relieving effect of pulsed magnetic therapy was detected in these central brain structures.
Specific intensity of the applied pulsed magnetic field was proportionally reflected by the change in BOLD activity. Changes in BOLD, that is Blood-Oxygen-Level-Dependent, activity were monitored by BOLD fMRI method contrast imaging used in functional magnetic resonance imaging.
Basically, the effect of pulsed magnetic therapy was evaluated based on the changing level of oxygen in the blood which had been observed in the above mentioned active areas of the brain.
The results confirmed that the reaction of the organism to pain – the reduced pain sensation – is proportional to the intensity of pulsed magnetic therapy.
