Affecting Healing of Arterial and Venous Leg Ulcers
Improvement in healing of arterial and venous leg ulcers using low-frequency pulsed magnetic field of 60-Hz frequency and 50-mT intensity was tested in a study (Cañedo-Dorantes et al., 2002) and its results were published in Archives of Medical Research.
Low-frequency pulsed magnetic therapy was applied to all 26 patients with a total of 42 chronic leg ulcers.
Healing effects of pulsed magnetic field started to show just after two weeks in all patients.
The results however also revealed that worsening of lesions can still occur during the treatment in patients suffering with autoimmune disease. Eventually, a total of 69% of ulcers healed, while 50% of them healed within 16 weeks.
Ulcers remained healed in all these cases for at least another 6 months and in some cases even up to two years.
Low-frequency pulsed magnetic therapy not only demonstrated its strong efficacy and safety in treating leg ulcers, but in this study, it also surprised with its prolonged healing effects.
