Evaluation of Previously Published Clinical Findings on the Efficacy of Pulsed Magnetic Therapy for Back Pain
Evaluation of previously published clinical findings on the effectiveness of pulsed magnetic therapy on low back pain was the focus of a 2016 study by a research team from the University of Porto in Portugal.
Lower back pain is the most prevalent musculoskeletal condition in the general population worldwide. In this sense, pulsed electromagnetic field therapy (PEMP) has shown significant clinical benefits in several musculoskeletal cases. Therefore, the aim of this study was to quantitatively and qualitatively evaluate these benefits and especially to verify the analgesic effects of pulsed magnet therapy in patients with pathological conditions.
Specifically, an extensive search of several major databases of validated clinical trials (Pubmed, Scopus, Cochrane Library and PEDro) was conducted to assess The efficacy of PEMP therapy in reducing pain and clinical symptomatology in patients with pathological spinal pain. The search was conducted from January 2005 to August 2015 and was carried out by two independent investigators examining the most relevant studies. Finally, six studies were included in the qualitative analysis and five in the quantitative analysis.
Selected studies have shown clear a tendency for significant pain relief in groups of patients undergoing pulsed magnet therapy. The application of pulsed magnetic fields is proven and undeniably able to reduce pain intensity and improve back functionality in individuals with spinal pain. However, the authors also acknowledge that more research is needed on the effects of PEMP therapy on different types of back pain with standardized protocols to reach definitive conclusions for all specific cases.
