Treatment of functional disorders of the musculoskeletal system with either conventional pulsed magnetic therapy, or musically modulated pulsed magnetic therapy was evaluated on a total of 270 patients in the study of the Italian team of C. Corallo (2012) at the Università di Siena.
The effects of both types of pulsed magnetic therapy were compared not only against each other, but also to the placebo group. There were 90 patients suffering with osteoarthritis, 30 patients with carpal tunnel syndrome and 150 patients with either cervical spondylosis, or shoulder periarthritis.
Musically modulated pulsed magnetic therapy is based on the original sinusoidal pulsed magnetic therapy with frequencies up to 100 Hz and intensities in the range of millitesla.
Recording of Concerto no. 2 in C minor for Piano and Orchestra, Op. 18 of Sergei Rachmaninov in this case modulated pulsed magnetic field. This means that the intensity, frequency and shape of the pulses were changing according to this piece of music while staying in the range (up to 100 Hz) of the original pulsed magnetic therapy.
All evaluations confirmed significant efficiency and safety in both types of pulsed magnetic therapy as opposed to placebo group.
The results do not show any major difference between the standard pulsed magnetic therapy and musically modulated version. Both types confirmed analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects of pulsed magnetic therapy for functional disorders of the musculoskeletal system.
